Sat 12 Dec 2009  League
Gildersome III 2
Grangefield 5

Andy Thorpe (4)
Chris Pearson (1)

This week saw the reverse fixture of the previous week’s game meaning the two teams knew much more about each other than they did before the previous game.

After been forced into a number of changes Grangefield were yet again slow out of the blocks and took a while to settle into the game, Gildersome on the other hand looked up for revenge of last weeks 7 - 2 defeat and started the better of the two teams going 1 - 0 up after Chris "pigeon chaser(?!?!)" Wilko's compulsory OG of the season, lobbing the ball over his brothers head with a sliced clearance.

As last week, going behind got the Grangey lads into gear and Tommo & Cairnsy started putting themselves about in the middle, giving the Spurs lads no time to settle on the ball and trying to use the pace of the two lads up front when they were in possession. The equaliser came from a bit of a scramble in the box with Thorpey who gave the Spurs defence a tough time all game, poking the ball home. 1 – 1

Grangey then started to settle with the defence limiting the number of Spurs chances to a minimum as Tetley & Scott were winning the aerial challenge and the full backs working hard to keep the Spurs attack at bay and even helping out Si & Tom in front of them who had a lot of space and were always looking to get round the back of their opponents.

The second goal came from a through ball from just within the Spurs half where a defensive mistake left Thorpey in front of goal with only one outcome, 2 -1 and his second of the game.

Further goals then came from Peo & Thorpey again, with two good strikes beating the Spurs keeper and with a goal from Spurs in between after a rare mistake from the Ste Wilko in goal, the score at half time was 4 – 2 and Grangey feeling that “more of the same” would get them the right result after 90.

The second half became a stale mate with both defences performing well but Grangey probably creating more chances and having the majority of the possession. Changes throughout the half brought Flesher, Mick and Sandi into the game who all played their part and slotted in well.

The final nail for Spurs came when Thorpey saw an opportunity which others might have given up on but not him as he put a tackle in on the keeper who was left looking back to see the ball in the back of the net seconds later. 5 – 2

A good game today with all playing their part and working for each other apart from the odd bit of bickering which needs to be left out. A word for the reserve lads who showed up to either to help out on the field or show their support from the side and to the ref who got most decisions right and kept the game flowing.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE BOYS! Let’s keep it that way!
