A true six pointer today with the winners knowing they would finish up the day sitting at the top of division 2. There was a lot of expectation for a game that didn't turn out to be the spectacle that everyone was expecting but this again was down to the pitch rather than anything else!
The game swung in balance on a number of occassions and if I was a neutral I think a draw would have been a fair result but I'm not so i'll say we completley deserved it :o)
A lot of the play was in the middle of the park and for Grangey going through Oz and Luke who worked hard all day as did every other player that took to the field. Beeston were trying to use their height advantage and kept the ball off the uneven surface which on occassions was pretty effective but the Grangey defence held out well with Steve Wilko making some good saves to keep his team in the game.
The complete deadlock was broke just before half time when the two wingers swapped sides to immediate effect. A good bit of play down the right ended up at the feet of Dacre who put a square ball in through the middle of two Beeston defenders to the on coming winger on the left, Peo with a quick dummy to give himself enough time to slot (or slice if you listen to Greeney) the ball away with one of the only clear cut chances either side had had all half.
1 - 0 half time
Grangey knew the second half would be just as hard work as the first and so it proved with Beeston coming out fighting however, the defence held strong but as the half went on Beeston took more control of the game as they looked for an equaliser which innevitably came. Both teams then carried on to create some half chances but nothing more than that, Beeston were using their left side to get at our defence and whip the ball over at any opportunity, at this point they looked the more likely to get a result but they were struggling to get the ball into the feet of their strikers whilst Grangey were trying to soak up the pressure and hit their opponents on the break.
Eventually that plan paid off and from Thorpey in defence a ball was worked to Tommo on the left who slipped a perfectly waited ball through to Ross who took one of the few chances he'd had today to hammer the ball in the back net.
2 - 1 Grangey is how it finished and we were more than happy with the result which left us a point ahead of our opponents with a game in hand meaning the league is in our own hands. A good fighting display from everyone today and without mentioning all 7 players that played in defence at some point of the game they all know they did a good job and trusted the midfield & attack to get them the goals. All in all a good team/squad display.
All are looking forward to another big game next week, we're on a roll so why stop now!
